Church History

A group of 12 people were dismissed from Hepzibah Church in East Feliciana Parish to form a church close to Colyell. It was some of that group who met on Saturday April 22, 1837, to constitute into a Church called Hebron Baptist Church.  David D. Felps, Rev. Thomas M. Bond, Henry L. Achord, Larkin Story, William McMurray, Catherine Achord, Rebecca Bond, and Rev. Jesse Young, who acted as presbytery, constituted into a Church. After reading the Articles of Faith and the Covenant by Rev. Thomas Bond, the Church went into business. Joseph Ficklin and Rebecca Jenkins were received by experience as members. Thomas Bond was elected the first Pastor and David D. Felps the first Deacon.

In the 171 years of Hebron Baptist Church’s service to God and this community, much has happened.  The community and church have seen their sons and daughters go to the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Iraq, and the on-going war against terrorism.

We have worshiped together on Saturdays, Sundays, and in revivals (Protracted meetings) that lasted between a day to two weeks at a time. We have eaten together, as we do at Homecoming each year.  We have played together at ball games, skated in the CAC, and had fun at the Backyard Bar-B-Que. We have cried together over the loss of a member and friend, family, or a pastor. We have rejoiced together over souls coming to know Jesus Christ as Savior, new babies, marriages, and anniversaries.

Hebron has had at least 32 pastors. Several served more than one time. We have paid them with beans, strawberries, eggs, and money when we had it. We have taken them into our hearts and homes and they have loved us back.

Missions has always been important to the members of Hebron. We have helped start and support missions in our parish and around our state. We have taught our children about missions in Royal Ambassadors, Girls in Action, and Mission Friends. Our adults have participated in Brotherhood and W.M.U., community and foreign missions. Our youth participate in missions at Fuge and at home. A number of our adults and youth have been to Nicaragua. How could you serve? Hebron offers you a church home where you can serve our Risen Lord as we work together.
